Holbrook Academy is dedicated to providing more than just a high-quality education. At our core is ‘The Holbrook Way’ – a vision that guides every aspect of school life, instilling character, values, and resilience in our students. This approach defines the characteristics, experiences, and behaviours that we believe will set our students on a path toward personal success and positive contribution to society. By embracing ‘The Holbrook Way’, students at Holbrook Academy develop the confidence, strength, and kindness to thrive both academically and personally. Full details of ‘The Holbrook Way’ can be found in the ‘The Holbrook Way’ Booklet
A Holistic approach to education
Research in education and psychology supports what we see daily at Holbrook Academy: that character education significantly enhances both academic performance and personal fulfilment. Studies have shown that when students learn qualities like resilience, kindness, and determination, they become more engaged learners and empathetic individuals (Berkowitz & Bier, 2005). ‘The Holbrook Way’ is our structured framework for instilling these values, which prepares our students to navigate a changing world with confidence and capability.
The Holbrook characteristics:
Each characteristic of ‘The Holbrook Way’ is carefully chosen to support both personal growth and community-building.
Tolerance – In a diverse society, understanding and respecting others is crucial. Teaching tolerance fosters empathy, reduces prejudice, and prepares students to thrive in multicultural environments (Eisenberg & Miller, 1987). Our commitment to tolerance ensures that Holbrook Academy students are ready to lead and succeed in a globally connected world.
Confidence – Confidence allows students to pursue new opportunities without fear of failure. By nurturing this trait, we empower our students to embrace challenges, develop a growth mindset, and take ownership of their futures (Dweck, 2006). Confident students are more likely to participate in class, pursue leadership opportunities, and engage in their communities.
Kindness – Kindness is the foundation of a supportive community, and research shows that cultivating kindness in schools reduces bullying and promotes positive relationships (Payton et al., 2008). At Holbrook, students are encouraged to lead with kindness, creating a welcoming atmosphere where every individual feels valued.
Resilience – Life is full of challenges, and resilience is essential for overcoming them. By teaching resilience, we help students learn to cope with setbacks and keep striving toward their goals (Masten, 2014). Resilience is woven into school life at Holbrook Academy, so students emerge prepared to face both the joys and difficulties of adulthood with strength and adaptability.
Determination – Also known as ‘grit’, determination is a powerful predictor of success. Students who demonstrate determination are more likely to persevere, even when faced with obstacles (Duckworth et al., 2007). At Holbrook, we encourage every student to pursue their ambitions with drive and focus, knowing that this trait will serve them well beyond their years with us.
Holbrook Habits
At Holbrook Academy, we believe that cultivating certain habits is key to both academic success and personal growth. Our ‘Holbrook Habits’ represent six essential qualities that every student should strive to embody: punctuality, preparation, politeness, presentability, positivity, and productivity. These habits not only contribute to a respectful, organized school community but also equip students with skills they will carry with them well beyond their time here. Further details of the ‘Holbrook Habits’ can be found here – Holbrook Habits
Preparing Students for a dynamic world
‘The Holbrook Way’ offers an approach that goes beyond academics to equip students with essential life skills. By emphasising qualities that are both socially and professionally valuable, we prepare students for the complexities of the real world. Studies show that schools emphasizing social-emotional learning and character education see stronger academic performance, better social skills, and greater student well-being (Durlak et al., 2011). Our approach makes Holbrook Academy a nurturing place where students become not only successful scholars but also caring, resilient individuals ready to make a positive impact.
Building a supportive community at Holbrook Academy
‘The Holbrook Way’ sets the foundation for a positive, inclusive environment where every student is encouraged to grow, both individually and as a part of our larger school community. Whether in the classroom, on the sports field, or through community service and leadership opportunities, Holbrook students are continually practising and reinforcing these values. Our graduates leave not only with academic accomplishments but also as compassionate, driven individuals ready to contribute meaningfully to society.
Holbrook Academy’s commitment to ‘The Holbrook Way’ is our promise to students and families. It is more than just a set of values; it is a culture that shapes the leaders and innovators of tomorrow. Through ‘The Holbrook Way’, we are cultivating young people who will not only adapt to the world but change it for the better.
